Youth Soccer Rules

Why are the rules different in youth soccer?

rules for youth players

Have you ever heard a parent or soccer coach screaming, "HAND BALL - HAND BALL" to a ref?

Well there is good chance that there was a hand ball. There is a better chance that the hand ball was unintentional and the child was simply reacting to protect their face. In youth soccer this is rarely called as a hand ball.

In youth soccer we allow the "rules" to be bent but not broken. A player might raise their foot when throwing in a ball from the side lines. In the REAL game, a whistle would be blown and the other team would be given the ball to throw in.

In youth soccer a "GOOD" ref will often stop the play, tell the player what they did wrong, and allow them another chance at doing it right.

Remember, youth soccer is a learning experience.

You should consult with your local league for their own modifications to FIFA rules.  Many make some SEVERE changes to them.

Two examples in many rec leagues are no slide tackles and no heading.
